How to keep Prostate Problems at bay

MEN OVER 40 START EXPERIENCING PROSTATE PROBLEMS

Prostate health is of great concern for men today. Usually, men over 40 start experiencing prostate health problems because prostate grows naturally with age, usually without problems. In some men, the enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, making urination difficult and causing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH symptoms include urinating frequently, especially at night, difficulty getting a urine stream going and feeling as if you are unable to get all the urine out.

HOW CAN I PREVENT PROSTATE PROBLEMS?

In some ways, prostate problems, particularly BPH, are a natural part of growing older. Still, there are specific steps you can take to keep your prostate healthy.

  • A diet low in saturated fats and high in fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of developing BPH.
  • No drug is known to prevent prostatitis. Experts recommend good hygiene. Most men will never develop prostatitis.
  • Natural supplements for prostate health are designed to improve the overall health of the prostate gland. They may also decrease the risk of the development of prostate disorders.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT SHOW PROMISE

The best-studied, most commonly used supplements to treat BPH are:

  • Beta-sitosterol
  • Pygeum
  • Nettle root
  • Saw palmetto
  • Pumpkin seeds

Beta-sitosterol: This is a substance found in many plants. It doesn’t affect the size of the prostate, but it may help your bladder empty and give you a stronger urine flow. It may improve other BPH symptoms as well.Studies with Harzol and Azuprostat, two supplements that contain beta-sitosterol from South African stargrass, have shown particular promise.

Pygeum: This comes from the bark of the African plum tree. It seems to help some men with BPH wake up less at night to urinate, go fewer times during the day, have a stronger urine stream, and empty their bladders better.

Nettle root: This is a type of herb, and its root may help with urine flow and waking a lot at night to urinate. It’s sometimes used along with other supplements to treat BPH symptoms.

Saw palmetto: This is a short tree that grows in North America. Some small studies have shown a benefit. Men may try it hoping to relieve common BPH symptoms. It may also help with waking up at night to go to the bathroom and feeling like you still have to urinate after you just went. For men who’ve had success with saw palmetto, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to see results.

Pumpkin seeds: These and pumpkin seed oil extract seem to help with BPH symptoms and may shrink the size of the prostate. It may also be helpful when used along with other supplements such as saw palmetto.
